This manuscript is part of a large collection of printed books given to the Chapter Library in 1939 by Miss Joan Somerville, great-granddaughter of Dean Henry Alford.

The Cathedral Archives catalogue entry reads:

'The text consists of psalms 1-108, 24 office hymns and the officium defunctorum followed by the prayer 'fidelium deus omnium conditor et redemptor animabus famulorum famularumque tuorum remissionem cunctorum tribue peccatorum ut indulgenciam quam semper optaverunt piis supe supplicationbus consequatur'.
Probably written in Germany as 3 of the office hymns appear to have been taken from breviaries in use in the diocese of Magdeburg.
Large illuminated initials on ff1, 28, 46, 79, 120, 141. Capitals are in red and blue and the large initials heightened with gold.
Date as [1450–1500].
Parchment and paper book, 166ff, 5.5x3.75in, bound in leather covered wooden boards.'

The first 18 leaves are written on vellum; the remainder of the book is on paper (octavo format).

The book is bound on wooden boards covered in modern brown morocco. The chamfered boards are clearly original with cut-away slots for clasps. An older (original?) cover is mounted on the front board with a blind-stamped design of diapers composed of dotted fillets each enclosing a simple fleur de lys; it is possible that this design is modern, in imitation of earlier styles.
