William Gostling (1696–1777), the author of A Walk in and about the City of Canterbury (1774; subsequent editions 1777, 1779, 1796, 1804, and 1825) was educated at King's School, Canterbury, and at St John's College, Cambridge (1711; B.A. 1715; M.A. 1719). He was rector of Brook near Wye, Kent (1722) and was a minor canon at Canterbury Cathedral from 1727 until his death. His father, the singer John Gostling was vicar of Littlebourne; he was succeeded by his son in 1733. From 1753 he was rector of Stone in Oxney.[1]
He inherited from his father a significant collection of music of the second half of the seventeenth century. His non-music books were sold in 1777 by William Flackton.[2]
