John Hume Spry

Dr John Hume Spry (1778–1854) was canon of Stall VIII at Canterbury Cathedral from 1828 until 1854. He was particularly active as canon librarian.

Spry was the son of the Rev. Benjamin Spry of Bristol (1742–1806, canon of Salisbury).[1] He was educated at Eton College and at Oriel College, Oxford (1796; BA 1799; MA 1802; B&DD 1824). He was minister of Christ Church Birmingham (1814-1816), vicar of Hanbury, Staffs (1816), rector of St Marylebone, Middlesex (1825), canon of Canterbury from 1828.[2]

His armorial bookplate has the motto 'Soyes sage et simple'.
