Richard Bancroft
Richard Bancroft ((1544–1610) was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1604.
The Chapter Library has a number of books from Bancroft's library, some of them with one of his two armorial book stamps (see below), some of them with a simple centre-piece binding with the initials "R B". These books were originally in Lambeth Palace Library and came into the Chapter Library at Canterbury after the Restoration through the gift by Archbishop Sancroft of duplicates from Lambeth Palace Library (c. 1680–1690).
Armorial binding stamps
Binding stamps with the arms of Archbishop Richard Bancroft (1544–1610)
Arms of Archbishopric of Canterbury, impaled with arms of Bancroft
(Or, on a bend, between six cross-croslets, azure, three garbs of the field)
The books with these arms were duplicates from the library at Lambeth Palace, given to the Cathedral Library by Archbishop William Sancroft c. 1680 (Benefactors' Book CCA Lit.MS.E40, ff.108v and 115r).
Bindings stamped with "R B"
Some of these books have a twentieth century pencil note stating that the initials R B are those of Richard Byrde (or Birde) who had been a canon of Stall X from 1590 to 1609. Professor James Carley confirms that the initials are in fact those of Archbishop Bancroft and that the books can be traced in the catalogues of his library; at least one still has a post-Reformation Lambeth Palace shelfmark. Other examples are found in the Lambeth collections.[1]
