Robert Payne Smith

Robert Payne Smith (1818–1895) was Regius Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford and Canon of Christ Church from 1865 to 1870. He was Dean of Canterbury from 1871 until his death in 1895.

Payne Smith was educated at Pembroke College, Oxford (1837, B.A. 1841; Fellow 1843). He was a Hebrew and Syriac scholar and author of the Thesaurus Syriacus (1868, completed after his death). He was a member of the committee of revisers for the Old Testament of the English Revised Version of the Bible and presented copies of both the New Testament (1881) and the Old Testament (1885) to the Cathedral Library.
