Armorial bookplate on front pastedown: R.dus Smith Coll. Jesu Cantabr..
Inscription (crossed through) on verso facing title page: James Mills's Book. The Gift of the Revd. Philip Parsons, of Wye in Kent, August 17th 1787.
Inscription on verso facing title page: Charlotte Puckle, Jan. 10th. 1822. The Gift of the Revd. J. Mills.
Probably given to the Library by Canon Edward Moore, son of Charlotte Puckle.
Owned in succession by the Revd Richard Smith (1711-1772), the Revd Philip Parsons (1729-1812) of Wye, who gave the book in 1787 to the Revd James Mills, who gave it in turn to Charlotte Puckle in 1822. Charlotte Puckle was the mother of the Revd Canon Edward Moore (1835-1916), principal of St Edmund Hall, Oxford, and Canon of Canterbury from 1903, an Italianist who specialised in Dante. The book is likely to have come into the Chapter Library from Canon Moore.
