The first recorded owners were Sir Richard Lewknor (senior) (1540–1616), Chief Justice of Wales and/or ChesterM.P. for Chichester, and his grandson Richard Lewknor (junior) (c.1589-1635), M.P. for Midhurst and then for Sussex. Other members of the family include Richard Lewknor M.P. (c. 1589–1635); Sir Christopher Lewknor M.P. (1598–1653); John Lewknor M.P. (1624-1669). Some members of the family spelled their surname Lewkenor.

William Somner's daughter Elizabeth (b.1639) was married in 1675 to John Lewkner, a hatter and haberdasher, who died in 1684 (David Wright). However, this must be a coincidence since William Somner bought the book second-hand for 16 shillings in 1644.
