Benjamin Harrison (1808–1887) was educated at Christ Church, Oxford (matriculated 1826; Student 1828; BA 1830; MA 1833). He taught Hebrew at Oxford for the next ten years. He was appointed a Six Preacher at Canterbury by Archbishop Howley in 1842 and probably gave the 1843 Polyglott Bible to the Library shortly afterwards, perhaps on his installation. He was appointed Archdeacon of Maidstone in 1845 and moved into the Precincts. He was at one time Canon Librarian with Dean Alford. His personal library, which included books left to him by Archbishop William Howley, was given to the Cathedral by his widow in 1887. His books have his armorial bookplate (possibly Franks 13880).
