Edmund Burges was a choir man and a minor canon from 1661[1] to 1681 (reinstated in 1670 after a suspension for drunkenness);[2] he was also vicar of Willesborough, d. 1681. He is also recorded as being a minor canon at Rochester Cathedral in 1662 and vicar of All Saints, Hoo Allhallows (diocese of Rochester) from 1663 to 1665.[3]

The binding of W2/X-5-11 recorded below suggests that it was originally in an institutional library in the 16th century, possibly in Canterbury.
The earliest recorded owner, William Watmer was an alderman of Canterbury in the early 17th century, and mayor in 1608 and 1620. His son Giles Whatmer died in 1675, which coincides with the record of purchase, when the book was probably bought by Edmund Burges and subsequently given to the Cathedral Library.
