An unidentified Mr Ratcliffe, of Orwell in Cambridgeshire, is listed in the Benefactors' Book as giving the following volumes to the Chapter Library.

[ ] Ratcliffe de Orwell in Comitatu Canterbrigiæ Armiger dedit.
 Tertulliani Opera 2 Vol: fol
Epiphanij Opera, gr: lat: 2 Vol:
 Cypriani Opera. fol:
Basilij Opera, gr: lat: 3 Vol: fol:
Nazianzeni Opera, gr: lat: 2 Vol: fol:
Athanasij Opera, gr: lat: 2 Vol: fol:

These books are not found in the 1638 inventory but are listed in the 1649 inventory. It seems likely that they were given c.1640, possibly by a tenant of the Dean and Chapter at the time of renewal of a lease.

The online version of Venn's Alumni Cantabrigienses lists two brothers Radcliffe and Ratcliffe resident at Orwell in the early 17th century. Jeremiah Ratcliffe, one of the translators of the King James Bible, was vicar of Orwell from 1590 to his death in 1612 and was buried there.[1] His brother Sir Edward Radcliffe, physician to James I, is recorded as residing at Orwell (died 1631).[2] It seems possible that the donor of these six books was a descendant of one of these two brothers.
