In March 1650 the Parliamentary Trustees for Deans and Chapters gave instructions to Captain Sherman in Canterbury to catalogue the Chapter Library and have it transported to the Trustees' headquarters at Gurney House in the Old Jewry, London.[1] The inventory taken (see below) is in the form of a shelf list, dated 1649 (1650 new style). The books were not delivered immediately, apparently because of obstruction by local officials. Further instructions were issued by the Committee for Compounding which resulted in the library being shipped to London in May 1651 and allocated to Mr George Griffith at the Charterhouse.[2] Griffith had been appointed Preacher at the Charterhouse in the same year and held this office until 1661 when he was ousted in favour of a more orthodox successor.[3] The books were duly returned to Canterbury the same year.[2]
